Mehr über Jonathan
Jonathan’s journey to China began in 2003, when he made the decision to focus his studies on learning about Chinese language and culture, with an intensive focus on International Business and Economics. In the summer of 2004, he came to China as a volunteer English teacher, working in some of the most remote places of China. It was a huge eye-opening experience. After that time, it was not just about curiosity or the desire to learn and take on a challenge, but a fondness and love that he had started to develop for the Chinese people.
Upon his return to the U.S., Jonathan’s studies continued unabated. He placed his entire focus on Asia, from culture, politics, and even geography. This coincided with his interests in Operations Management and Economics. It was his objective to learn how to run a manufacturing facility and essentially operate a business.
In the summer of 2005, he returned to China again, this time to live in Shanghai. He attended China’s prestigious Fudan University and took an intensive Chinese language program. Even studying eight hours a day with two different tutors didn’t get in the way of Jonathan’s personal life, and he enjoyed exploring Shanghai and traveling around, meeting people from all over the world, and establishing life-long friendships.
As Jonathan approached graduation, the though of how to live in China permeated his mind daily. He had interviews with major companies in the U.S., but none of them could guarantee him a position right out of university. His big break came when he found a position as an Operations Manager for a U.S. company making high-end mass production water features.
For five years, Jonathan led a team managing the entire manufacturing operations of the company, controlling a 200-item product inventory, a component inventory, sourcing, costing, and negotiating with suppliers, accounting, managing quality, project managing, and engineering. After getting his feet wet, he wanted to push himself more and learn more about the different areas of manufacturing. He was generating interest from many companies to do consulting and QC work, build trust between suppliers and their clients, set up a WOFE, and doing project management for large scale orders.
Jonathan had been exposed to many different types of manufacturing, and even started developing his own product line with a close friend. Jonathan continues to serve customers at Star Rapid with the idea that manufacturing is not just his career, but an all-encompassing aspect of his life.
Jonathan first met Gordon Styles through business contacts while working in the water features industry. The two had been in contact constantly, sharing experiences, and offering a hand to each other whenever possible. Little did Jonathan know that this would actually be part of an interview process and an eventual offer to run the Star Rapid factory.
Knowing Jonathan’s history in detail allowed Star easy access to coach him throughout his career in China. When he was offered the position of Factory Manager at Star, Jonathan jumped at the chance to do exactly what he was looking for when he started his journey back in 2003.
Jonathan takes his job as part of the Star team very seriously, and is dedicated to ensure the company’s position as the best rapid prototyping, tooling, injection molding, die casting, and precision machining company in the world, all while expanding and maintaining its world-class facility and ensuring a happy and rewarding work environment for all employees.
